Visiting The Isle of Harris

Location

Harris is a spectacular area of land located in the centre of the Western Isles, an island chain off the North West coast of Scotland. The island is characterised by rugged hills interspersed with scattered lochans. Long expanses of white sandy beach stretch down the west coast of Harris, whilst the east coast has an indented coastline with numerous sheltered inlets and sea lochs. In the clean air and ever changing weather conditions the quality of light is unique and the views and vistas change continuously. The remote landscape is home to much of Scotland most iconic wildlife including golden eagles, red deer and otters.

The island holds 2000 inhabitants with Tarbert and Leverburgh being the centres of population both with good facilities and services. Many of the island inhabitants live on crofts, a traditional small agricultural holding unique to west Scotland. Gaelic is the first language of many inhabitants and Harris is one the only remainsing strongholds for the language.
